Rezumat:   One of the most important pedagogical principles holds that good education has to be based on needs. In this study we are dealing with the needs of teachers, and try to define if professional development courses can fully support the satisfaction of their needs.First, we start from the well-known theories about peoples’ needs (the theory of Maslow, Rogers, Deci & Ryan, Kasser) and examine if it is true that also in education teachers are motivated by a certain order of needs. We assume that to be prepared for the reality of the classroom, teachers must first be trained in such subsistence strategies and techniques as classroom management, guided reading models, cooperative learning, and process writing. Once teachers learn these basic skills, we can address their higher needs by helping them reflect on their deeper purposes as educators. We give a short presentation of the programs which started professional development from the top of Maslow’s pyramid, namely from the inside of the teacher. We present the onion model of Korthagen, referring to the content of reflection, and which could be applied in teachers daily practice. When reflecting on the deeper levels of the onion model – the level of identity and mission – a different kind of reflection is used, namely Core Reflection. As soon as people are more in touch with their own identity and mission, this not only creates a change of perspective towards the daily hassles of the profession, but it also opens up doors to more transformational changes. It may also lead to new types of behavior that are more in line with people’s missions and inner potentials. This is why the term Core Reflection for this kind of reflection is used: all the levels of the onion model are being connected. When there is a balance between the different layers of the model and when people are stimulated to identify and act upon their personal strengths, the fulfilment of the three basis psychological needs – the need for autonomy, for competence and for relatedness – is promoted.

Keywords: professional development, the needs of teachers, learning from inside, Core Reflection.
